Blessed are the poor.....

This past Sunday we looked at the scripture “blessed are the poor in spirit”

To be poor in spirit is not to beat yourself up or to have bad feelings about yourself. It’s to truly acknowledge you are nothing and can do nothing without Christ. It is to recognise your own failings but not dwell on or focus on them, but humbly say with the Apostle Paul; His grace is sufficient for me: for His strength is made perfect in weakness.

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6)

Humility is a quality that God can work with.

It’s an important attitude which enables you to respond with absolute submissiveness to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, through the Word of God. It’s often expressed in action by the willingness to take on the responsibility of loving and serving others, in obedience to the scriptures.

The Lord Jesus lived a practical example of what true humility is. First, He demonstrated His total submission to the will of the Father as it is written in Hebrews 10:7:

“Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do your will, O God.”

Secondly, the Bible tells us in Philippians 2:6-9, that though He was equal with God, He didn’t count His equality with God anything to latch on to. Rather, He made Himself of no reputation, taking upon Himself the form of a servant, and became obedient unto death. For this reason, God exalted Him and gave Him a Name that is above every name.

As Christians, we are called to emulate the humility of Christ. True humility for us is to be submissive to His Lordship as instructed in the teaching of scripture. So knowing the scriptures is an important part of growing spiritually and allowing them to guide your thoughts, words, and actions as the Holy Spirit teaches you.

True humility is the path to happiness!
