OIKOS

The term Oikos is contemporarily used to describe social groups.[38] Several dozen to several hundred people may be known, but the quality time spent with others is extremely limited: only those to whom quality (face-to-face) time is devoted can be said to be a part of an Oikos. Each individual has a primary group that includes relatives and friends who relate to the individual through work, recreation, hobbies, or by being neighbours. The modern Oikos, however, includes people that share some sort of social interaction, be it through conversation or simple relation, for at least a total of one hour per week. (Wikipedia)

At the Hub Church we have been talking about reaching people with the gospel. The question is:

Who are we being called to reach?

In Mark 5 Jesus told the newly free man to go and tell his Oikos the good news of his deliverance.

It is clear that as Christians we should be sharing the gospel with others without shame.

Matt 10:32-33

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

Tim 4:4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

I want to be better at this thing we call evangelism, but I don’t want to be so weird that I put ordinary people off the idea of becoming a Jesus follower.

So how do we do it well?

By loving people unconditionally, not thinking of yourselves, not worrying about what other ‘Christians’ might think.

-We lay down our lives for the sake (investment) of others regardless of cost or image. (John 4)

-We’re going to be unashamed of who we are and stand boldly for the truth (Luke 9:26)

-We’ll heal the sick ( Matt 4:23)

-We‘re going to forgive (Luke 11:4)

-We won’t judge (Matt 7:1-6)

-We’re going to be irrationally generous (Mark 12:41-44)

-We will take opportunities to preach and teach and share (Matt 5)

-We will trust Jesus fulfilled the law and live in freedom (Matt 5:17)

-We will trust in the resurrection (Matt 16:21)

-We will be great disciples first (John 8:31)

Who is in your OIKOS?
